My name is Hannah and I’m from Northern Ireland. When I decided to pursue Medicine as a career lots of people reacted with “Oh, medicine is a tough job!” and “It’s really hard to get in,” but I wasn’t deterred because I was willing to put the time into researching and preparing. Not everyone knows where to start with this, so to give everybody an equal chance this website aims to cover everything in one place and give you some insider information that has previously given more privileged students a leg up.

One difficulty I came across when looking for information myself was that most of the advice was there, but in lots of different places. I also found it really hard to choose which offer to accept, and from this I discovered the right and wrong ways of finding out about universities! Therefore, I’ll be taking you though picking medical schools and how to write your personal statement.

A huge range of activities can be applicable to medicine in ways you might never imagine – for example, musical theatre helped me to improvise in the moment, put myself in someone else’s shoes and maintain calmness in a stressful situation. I only had a couple of days of work experience, but by showing that I had really thought about what I saw and learnt from all my other extra-curricular activities, I could prove that this was the job for me.

Medicine needs people of all backgrounds, and I am really passionate about opening up these opportunities to everyone. It’s not always easy, but good manners and perseverance will get you a long way! It’s an amazing experience and I have been able to carry on lots of activities through uni in spite of the workload - and seeing the difference you will get to make one day proves that it’s all worth it. Best of luck!
